In 2012 I embarked on my first Declutter Challenge. I asked myself to remove 2012 things from our home over the course of the year and I succeeded. In fact, I cleared out over 2,500 items.
That’s roughly 6.8 items a day.
And In 2013…
The Declutter Challenge is on again, but this year I’d love you to join me.
2013 is the year I’m going to help you declutter – and de-own – at least 2013 items in your home.
Regardless of where you are on your simple living journey – if 2013 will be your first clutter-free year, or you’ve been simplifying for some time now – there’s always room to improve.
How Does it Work?
So we can best support each other through the obstacles we will undoubtedly face throughout the year, I have created a forum specifically for the 2013 in 2013 Declutter Challenge.
So the first step is to head over there and tell us a little about yourself. Your name, living arrangements and your current clutter situation. Also let us know if there is anything you really struggle with.
(If you’re the shy, retiring type, you can work alongside us in absolute anonymity. Whatever works for you!)
Each month on the blog, I’ll be publishing a printable checklist of clutter-rich places to focus on in your home over the course of the month. As you work through each space, removing clutter and unused items, keep an approximate count of the number of items leaving your home. Then you can report your progress on the forum.
The aim is then (obviously) to reach a total of 2013 items by the end of the year.
Are There Any Rules?
Not really. This is about simplifying your life and home, not anyone else’s.
That being said, don’t go making it too easy for yourself – this is a Challenge after all.
- Items you regularly throw away (general household rubbish/recyclables) don’t count towards the total.
- A single piece of paper doesn’t count. A folder of papers does – but only as one item.
- Try taking photos of most things – even just the pile or the bags waiting for donation. It will help keep you motivated and honest.
Your Monthly Checklists
Each month I will add a new checklist below. Simply click on the month you want to access and the checklist will download automatically. From there, feel free to share it with your friends or family.
- January – Month #1
- February – Month #2
- March – Month #3
- April – Month #4
- May – Month #5
- June – Month #6
- July – Month #7

What if I’ve Come to the Challenge Too Late?
It’s never too late! You just need to start wherever you are.
The month you begin isn’t important – just start by downloading the first monthly checklist and get underway. Then you can either work to catch up, or continue on with each month as you finish the previous one.
Believe me when I say 2013 can be your simplest year yet – if you choose.
So don’t be shy. Come and join the 2013 in 2013 Forum and join me as we declutter our way to a simpler, slower home.
