Live Immediately with Mike Campbell

Live Immediately with Mike Campbell - Episode 82 of The Slow Home Podcast

“Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow, and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortune's control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.”

-- Seneca

A lot of my guests over the past couple of months have spoken about making big life changes - travel, a shift in career or moving to a different place - but in every single instance these changes have been moving my guests closer to their Why. This is something I find constantly inspiring as Ben and I continue to make changes in our own lives and I really love going deep into the reasons and the practicalities of these transformations.

Today I chat with Mike Campbell, a fellow Australian who is currently house-sitting his way across the United States with his wife and daughter after selling or donating almost everything they owned. Mike writes at the blog Live Immediately, and as you’ll hear in this conversation, totally encapsulates this idea of living in accordance with his values and personifies the notion of, well, living immediately.

Mike and I talk about what his life was like only 18 months ago, when he was struggling in a job he was deeply unsatisfied with, his wife Inga was battling overwhelm and burnout and they found themselves wondering if this was really ‘it’. Unbeknownst to him, it would be a simple game that would shift his perspective to one of possibility and adventure as he learned to let go of the literal and figurative stuff that was weighing heavily. Now he’s someone who says yes, starts without the final destination in mind and finds joy in the unknown.

Also in this chat, Mike is super generous with his knowledge on long-term house-sitting which I found endlessly fascinating! He has kindly offered to help out anyone listening who might want to know even more about how he and Inga started the process, so if you wanted to chat, just check out his blog, Live Immediately or get in touch via Instagram.

In the meantime, enjoy this fun poggie!
