2012 in 2012

The past few weeks of holidays have inspired me. They’ve made me reconsider what’s truly important. Forced me to look at the hard truths and helped me realise that we are in control of our lives.

If we are unhappy, we have the power to change that.

We may not like what that means. We may not want to take the necessary steps to get there. We may be afraid. But we are still in control. And if we’re unwilling to stretch ourselves, to go out on a limb, to take risks – then do we really want that change so much?

In light of this, I’ve set myself a challenge. And I hope you’ll join me.

This year, I will rid myself, our kids and our home of 2012 things. 2012 items that are unnecessary, that are weighing us down, that make us feel bad.

2012 items that we don’t use, don’t want or don’t need.

On the face of it, it seems a fairly simple challenge. But for me, there’s no point in handing out success if it’s easily attainable. So…

THE RULES

  • Items I regularly throw away (general household rubbish/recyclables) don’t count towards the total.
  • A single piece of paper doesn’t count. A folder of papers does – but only as one item.
  • New things (clothes, toys, books etc) mean one similar item needs to go. These items don’t count.
  • Photos will be taken of most things – to keep me honest.

2012 items over the year works out at 5.6 unwanted, unneeded, unused items per day. Which sounds like more of a challenge.

So who’s with me? Anyone care to start 2012 with a pledge to cull the unnecessary stuff?

  1. I love this idea (just came over from your post that you are at 10% – well done!)

I don’t have much clutter in my house, I live in a tiny one-bedroom apartment with my husband, but we can always get rid of more.

I like the idea of setting a number and trying to reach it by the end of the year. I’ve started by listing a few things on ebay – what a pain! I think I’d rather just take a few things to Vinnies (even if they still have the tags on them!)

    • Tell me about it, Sally! Ebay selling is enough reason for me to reconsider buying unnecessary things in the first place! And the local Vinnies is doing really well from us at the moment.

We used to have a tiny place too, and while the one we’re now in isn’t huge, just having the extra room means you accumulate stuff without even really recognising it. So we’re finding we really need to be aware of what comes in these days. Plus, kids seem to breed stuff!

      Thanks for stopping in!

  2. I just found your website from a Live Your Way post. And I was curious when I saw the title Declutter 2012 in 2012. I have to admit, I wish I had found your site in January so I could have started with you then. My hubby and I have been decluttering (well I have, him…eh, not quite as much) for a good portion of the last few years. Hubby has gotten on board a bit more this year because we are expecting our 2nd child and we don’t want to be over-run with stuff. I know I still have stuff I can purge, I wonder if I can come up with 508 things to get me through the last quarter of the year???
