2013 in 2013 Declutter Challenge - January

As for me, I joyfully simplified my way through the month and decluttered:


  • Kids clothes x 63
  • Maternity clothes x 47
  • Craft items x 10
  • Side table
  • Christmas tree
  • Toys x 36
  • Storage boxes x 7
  • Shelving unit
  • Christmas decorations/decor x 12
  • Books x 6
  • Baby bowls/plates x 4
  • Jewellery supplies x 500-plus (but I’m only counting it as one)

Give Away (to friends/family):

  • Kids clothes x 45
  • Toys x 15
  • Jewellery x 31

Throw Away:

  • Broken toys x 31
  • Misc. x 12

Progress to Date: 323 unwanted items are gone!

(And damn it feels good.)

February is the Month of…

Now thoughts turn to February’s projects.

February is the month of Bathrooms, Laundry and the Office/Study.

Which means that February is also the month of paperwork – a clutter trap in many homes that strikes fear in the heart of many.

We will be decluttering the following areas over the next few weeks:


  •     Cosmetics
  •     Candles/Gift packs
  •     Bath toys
  •     Out-of-date lotions etc


  •     Cleaning supplies
  •     Mismatched socks, etc
  •     Clothes waiting for ‘repair’
  •     Storage – food, outdoor toys, rain gear, etc


  •     Filing cabinet
  •     Drawers
  •     Desk surface
  •     Computer desktop and hard-drive
  •     Email inboxes


  •     Old bills, paperwork, tax information, etc
  •     Magazines
  •     Papers requiring action
  •     Papers waiting to be filed

  1. Definitely did not take out as many things as you Brooke! But I am happy with my slow beginning and hope more items will be vacating my home once I work on my clutter spots.

  2. I didn’t know we were counting, whoops, ha ha. I’ve just been getting rid of stuff =) Selling what I can of value, and later what I can’t sell, I will try to freecycle. I have gone through and either filed, piled for shredding, or threw out all the piles of papers in my office (which was a huge accomplishment!). But my office is my junk room, so I will have to take more than just February to completely declutter my office =) But I’m glad to have a month to remind myself of the focus needed here! Love these checklists! =)

    • Getting rid of stuff is the aim of the game – the numbers are just for fun! Some people will only find 213 things, others may have 20,013! Sounds like you’re making massive inroads though. Love it!

  3. Hey Brooke, that looks like an awesome start to February. One of the areas I’m itching to tackle is my closet. I’ve done my kitchen, office, living room, but have been putting off my closet. I don’t know why, I feel it would be an easy thing for me. Thanks for stopping by my site as well, I really appreciate the support. ALOHA!

    • Thanks, Daniel! You know, so many people feel the same about their wardrobes. Maybe because we put a lot of time and money into the contents, we don’t want to let go and admit that much of it is just taking up space. Let me know how you go with it when you do tackle the clothes!

  4. When you first posted this challenge at the beginning of the year, I laughed and thought I would never be able to find that much stuff. I have been downsizing our stuff for years and at least one big contractor garbage bag full of stuff leaves our house every month for as long as I can remember. Then I thought oh well I will give it a try and see how close I can get. I put a big bag and 2 boxes by our door and taped a piece of paper to the wall so we could tally stuff as soon as we put it in. The bag is for anything going to the thrift store. One box is for things to go to the pantry at our church and the other box is for stuff that needs to be returned to someone. Yesterday I passed the goal!! We have gotten rid of 2186 items so far.

    Yikes!! Where did it all come from? It mus be breedig in the backs of closets!

    Anyways we aren’t done, My family sees how neat the bathroom and living room are and how easy it is to get them clean and they want it too. My kids have started going through their rooms and my husband keeps saying he can’t wait for spring so we can go through the shed. I’ve been telling my mom what I have been doing and how great it feels and now she is doing it too. Thank you for hte encouragement to get rid of more stuff!

    • Dannielle, you can colour me impressed!! That is so fantastic to hear. And I know exactly what you mean about feeling surprised. Each time I have another round of paring back our belongings I am surprised at what I find. I think it’s more that your attitude towards stuff changes every time, so you place less importance on things you once thought mattered.
