Bringing back the blog, baby!
Well friends, it’s been a minute between newsletters (approximately two years) and even longer between blog posts. (Six years, maybe?) But lately I’ve felt what can only be described as a pull. A deep desire to create and connect away from the BS games of algorithms and the ever-changing face of social media.
Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older (I turned 40 a couple of weeks ago and yes, I have many Thoughts about that which will have to wait for another day). Maybe it’s a transition we’re all feeling two years into a global pandemic - searching for something real.
Whatever it is, I’m bringing back the blog (and, over the coming weeks, the newsletter too).
I started blogging when my kids were tiny, some time in 2010 (alas, the earliest posts have been lost to wherever it is that old blogs go to die). I was in the weeds of severe, undiagnosed post-natal depression and desperately needed a sense of purpose and connection. Blogging gave me both.
Through putting my words on the page all those years ago I’ve:
met some of my favourite people in the entire world
found a community of awkward, like-minded, creative introverts
learnt how to have confidence in my writing
realised there is a massive number of people around the world who are interested in living life against the grain; going slow when we’re told to go fast
decided on a whim to ‘try this podcasting thing’ and 8 years later, am still at it
written and published three books on slow living
learnt and changed and evolved more than I could ever truly articulate
And now, quite a bit older, slightly greyer and definitely more content, I know one thing to be true: when I slow down and pay attention, I can hear an inner-voice that rarely leads me astray.
Right now she is telling me in no uncertain terms that it is time to write, to connect, to try something that’s both old and new, and through it all, try to weave a thread of connection.
So that’s what I’m doing. Picking up the pen, starting a Substack (a blog/newsletter hybrid) and forging a new path in the slow living space…
The Tortoise.
An evolving blog and newsletter that asks the question: what does it mean to live slow in a world that won’t stop racing?
You can subscribe by adding your email to the box below.
