Future-steading with Jade Miles

With climate disasters and global public health catastrophes dominating the news cycle, it can be really hard to find a hopeful, practical way forward some days. It all feels too much. Sure, we might believe in the importance of supporting local farmers or reducing our own plastic consumption, but on the days where the problems feel enormous and overwhelming, those small acts of change fall to the side, seemingly not powerful enough.

Enter today’s guest, the exuberant Jade Miles - co-host of the Future-steading podcast and one half of the duo who runs Black Barn Farm, a permaculture orchard and regenerative ag farm in northern Victoria.

Jade is a breath of fresh air, and throughout our conversation introduces us to the fundamentals of ‘future-steading’; a philosophy that invites everyone to help create a culture that values tomorrow.

Slow living and future-steading share many principles, some of which Jade and I explore in this conversation. Things like supporting local producers, living seasonally, knowing why you want to change the way you live, reconsidering what enough is to you and how you can measure success if not by modern, capitalist means are key tenets of future-steading.

Jade also talks about the seven distinct pillars of future-steading which include:

  • finding a sense of awe in our surroundings and the food we eat

  • taking time to notice the rhythms of where we live

  • harnessing the joy of tiny daily rituals

  • creating a sense of place and belonging in our home and our communities

We also talk about Jade's beautiful new book Future-steading, a practical and inspirational guide to living in a way that values tomorrow: a slower, simpler, steadier existence that is healthier for you, your home and the environment.

It’s not overstating it to say that this is a heart-lifting conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
