Slow Living in Japan

Slow Living in Japan - Episode 131 of The Slow Home Podcast

We’re baaa-aaaack!

Happy 2017, my friends. I’ve actually spent the past week saying Happy New Year to people before realising it’s now February and the time for New Year salutations has probably passed. Regardless though, I hope you all had a restful break over the holidays?

Things are getting back to normal here, the kids are back to school, work is in full swing and, true to a Sydney summer, it’s pretty much sweltering. We did take some time off to disconnect/reconnect after a busy 2016 though, and as you’ll hear in this poggie, the first new one of 2017, we spent a couple of weeks in Japan and had an incredible, perspective-shifting time there.

We spent most of our time nestled into the utterly beautiful town of Nozawa Onsen - a small, traditional ski and hot spring village in the mountains northeast of Tokyo - and as we head in to the meat and potatoes of the year, we’re taking with us quite a few lessons learnt while staying there.

We thought it would be fun to start the year with a chatty, light-hearted poggie of just Ben and I, so in this episode we talk about what some of those lessons looked like and how they’re already influencing us at home. We also talk about the beautiful ritual of onsen bathing, the benefits of sleeping on traditional Japanese futons and tatami mats and the amaaaazing food we discovered while there.

Below you can find a handful of links, resources and websites we used when planning and researching our trip, and I can highly, absolutely, unequivocally recommend it as an incredible family holiday. I can’t wait to go back and if ever you're looking to take a similar trip I'd recommend talking to the folks at Nozawa Holidays. They were beyond awesome in helping us find the perfect accommodation in a family-run, traditional Japanese lodge and their website is full of excellent information. (This is not a sponsored episode, by the way. They were just awesome.)
