So this is 40 with Ben McAlary

Long-time listeners of the podcast might remember that way back in June 2018, I interviewed Ben about his journey from stressed-out, disengaged, corporate-ladder-climbing man to slow-living, risk-taking, emotionally available self-employed person. To be completely honest, we recorded that episode as a filler when a couple of guests had to reschedule, but it turned out to be one of the most popular shows of the year.

So, we decided that Part Two was well overdue and figured the start of Season 8 of the show was the perfect place to share it with you.

Fair warning though: this is a rambling, emotional conversation that very nearly didn’t make the pod at all. Ben and I both had big vulnerability hangovers afterwards and truthfully, I’m still a little nervous.

We open on solid ground, with an introduction to the season ahead (it’s a cracker!) and some news about the Care audiobook (finally!) and how to get your hands on a personalised, signed copy (or two!) of my books. Then, it’s into the nitty gritty. We talk about:

  • turning 40 and the unexpected impact it had on Ben

  • how we got through the first nine months of 2021

  • the emotional toll of nearly losing my dad earlier in the year

  • why Ben is now focusing on his health and well-being more

  • the struggles he’s faced with identity and gender roles

  • why redefining our shared value of adventure has been so important

It’s juicy and heartfelt and possibly a little awkward. But I hope you enjoy it!
