Reclaiming activism with Hannah Moloney

It’s not often that I get giddy ahead of recording an episode. Nervous, sure. Intimidated, absolutely. But fangirling like a complete dork? Very rare. Unless, of course, I’m speaking to one of my favourite activists/presenters/authors/world-changers. Then, I’m as giddy as a kid on a merry-go-round.

You get to hear my delight in today’s episode, as Ben decided to keep all of my gushing in the episode, which is great. He told me it was “cute,” which I don’t mind as much as the fact that I call today’s guest, the incomparable Hannah Moloney of Goodlife Permaculture, “my John Lennon.”

Yep. Real dorky.

If, however, you can ignore my dorkishness, you really are in for a treat in today’s episode. Hannah, as many of you would know, is a presenter on Gardening Australia, a brilliant permaculture designer based in nipaluna/Hobart, author of the recently released book The Good Life and all-round kickarse problem-solver, grower, mother, partner and goat-raising, anti-establishment, pro-community activist.

As always, the conversation is wide-ranging and surprising, and Hannah and I dig into:

  • The importance of values in activism

  • Using your values as a foundation on which to make choices

  • How Hannah deals with the heart-hurting burnout that comes with caring deeply

  • Hannah’s relationship with rest and care

  • How illness and burnout caused her to reassess the way she was spending her time

  • The delightful idea of having a ‘sanctuary thought’

  • What Covid taught Hannah about community

  • Her counter-cultural upbringing and learning how to own her personal brand of activism

It’s a genuine delight of a conversation with a genuinely passionate person. Just try to listen to Hannah without feeling a stirring in your heart, I dare you!
