Eating for a happier planet with Alexx Stuart

Sometimes, in our efforts to do better by the planet, our communities, our families and ourselves, we can get tangled in knots. Especially when it comes to food.

It seems that no matter what we choose to do - go plant-based, support regenerative farmers, grow our own, buy local, meal plan and budget and buy the best our supermarket offers - we will, at some stage, feel like it’s “not enough”. And in my experience, that feeling leads to overwhelm, eco-anxiety and ultimately an us-versus-them mentality. None of which is particularly productive when all we want to do is make the world a slightly better place.

Today’s guest, Alexx Stuart, is here to talk us down from this way of thinking, and I’m delighted that she is, because stressing constantly about “doing food right” is exhausting.

This is a conversation that looks at food choices through the lens of finding common ground, avoiding absolutes and applying critical thought, and let me tell you, it’s a breath of fresh air. Alexx is super knowledgeable about food and reducing its impact not only on our own health, but also that of the planet, and throughout today’s episode we discuss:

  • The importance of highlighting the things we agree upon rather than focusing on the things we differ on

  • Seeing our food choices as a form of activism

  • The creativity that is inherent in cooking

  • How to overcome the obstacles of time, access and perfectionism in making better choices

  • The role of social media in creating and growing food trends, and how to use it to promote sustainability instead

  • Why it’s important to view our food systems holistically, rather than focus on one hot-button topic

  • Why we need to harness our own voice for good and to promote change at a higher level

  • How to ensure we focus on progress rather than perfection

  • Where to begin making better choices for our own health, and also the health of the planet.
