Advocacy and care with Hannah Diviney

Do you ever find yourself at the intersection between Big Care (activism and advocacy) and Small Care (connection, creativity and rest), unsure of how to strike a balance between the two? If so, you’re not alone. It’s a theme I keep returning to again and again in the podcast this year, as so many of us grapple with the question of ‘How do I care sustainably?’

Today’s guest, Hannah Diviney, is here to dig deep into that very question. Hannah is a leading disability rights activist, writer, student and editorial and creative lead of Missing Perspectives - a global platform founded to address the marginalisation of young women in both news coverage and decision-making around the world. In a word, Hannah Diviney is a powerhouse.

But even powerhouses burn out, which is where Hannah and I start our conversation. How can we keep showing up in life, in those big issues we care about, in work and family and our passions, while also making time for rest? And more specifically, how do we do that without guilt?

Hannah shares her personal relationship with care and rest, and we also talk about:

  • Rest and self-care through the lens of disability

  • The toll that comparison takes and why it has no place in the way we view rest

  • Creativity and story-telling - in both a broad sense and in the stories we tell ourselves

  • The lockdown changes that improved accessibility, and why Hannah is hoping to see them remain in post-lockdown Australia

  • Disability representation in pop culture and why it’s so important

  • And why she’s taking on Disney, in the hopes of one day seeing a Disney princess with disabilities

This is a conversation that I will come back to again and again, for the sheer energy that Hannah brings to everything she does, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
